Mythology

The culture of Reft is a stew of legend and history. There aren't many records of history from more than several hundred years back. No one is sure why. This leads to a confusion of fantasy and reality. What may be a folk tale to some people may actually be based on an historical event, but they have no way of knowing.

So there isn't a strong common mythology that people draw from there. The populace has come to rely on dreamcrafters to invent fantasies for them, and dreamcrafters each have different stories to tell.

There does seem to be a kind of fantastical undercurrent in Reft though, because a lot of dreamcrafting is informed by mythical creatures like dragons and unicorns and wyverns. These creatures may have existed at one time on Reft, and some may still exist.

In general, there exists a subconscious desire for a common mythology, but most people are content to live in a world where dreamcrafters can create such creatures for them.

Back Story

Reft is a seed world, an egg of potential creation, where Arthur has hidden away great power. The habitable portion of Reft is protected by a dimensional rift, essentially rendering it invisible. From the outside, Reft appears to be barren and uninhabited. To those living on the planet, the rift presents itself as the Everwall, titanic walls of scintillating energy forming the edges of the world. Passage through the walls is one-way.

Taran is the Keeper of the Brown Book, a seemingly innocuous volume of inconsistencies about Reft. It is actually the key to Reft. New passages will appear when Reft is threatened or when the time of its germination approaches. The Brown Book, in conjunction with the song of Wyldehame, will trigger the Hivestead towers, bringing down the Everwall, making Reft visible to the Otherdarken.

Arthur arrives in Revery disguised as the Wefter to obtain the Merkstave from the Arcanus Combine. This way, his actions cannot be traced by either the Otherdarken or the College. Once Rubric is awakened, he will be able to ‘craft the hearts desires of those around him. When Arthur uses the Merkstave on the Obsidian Codex, Rubric’s power changes it into Elysia.

To release Reft’s potential energy, Arthur will arrange for the Obsidian Codex to be transformed into a human, who will seek out the Font at the top of the Many Storied Stair, the Foot of which is hidden beyond the energy walls of Reft. This person, Elysia, will inseminate Reft with the code to realize its ultimate potential. Using the Otherdarken’s own transformative power, Arthur hopes to make Reft the birthplace of all his unrealized plans and dreams. But something goes wrong at the Font and Elysia is dispersed into hundreds of Pages. Instead of creating one world, hundreds are birthed.

Perhaps the Brown Book will be transformed into a kind of index or divining rod that can track down the various new worlds as Rubric searches for Elysia.
