House of Whack

House of Whack is a creative social experiment which has manifested as a board game.

The game is loosely based on a play-by-email role-playing game I ran on The Airliner BBS called Blackthorne Manor. The characters had all met at the strange Manor, drawn by secret motives. Each character had a secret power (they were a vampire, they could teleport, etc.). I initially tried to write a computer text adventure game in the setting.

The game takes inspiration from the tile-placement mechanics of Mystery Mansion and Chill: Black Morn Manor, and the variable powers, expandability and general randomness of Talisman and Cosmic Encounter.

I began work on the first prototype of the game on June 12th, 2001.
