The Angst Farmers Rock Once More

I finally secured my own Rock Band set! I also spent a fruitless search driving around town looking for a cheap mic stand and a drum throne. I guess those will show up later.

I’ve gotten stuck in the vocalist solo tour. I ran up against a set list with only one song I know. So now I need to listen to Fall Out Boy, KISS, The Killers and one other band over and over until I learn the lyrics.

Cathulhu

Tonight I thought of the word “Cathulhu” and I was inspired to create this image. Click on it for a larger version.

Show Me Something Real

I had been trying to come up with a good name for my SELP project. I had started with “Many Visions for Single Voices,” which was serviceable. Then I thought “Singularity” sounded kind of good. But today I think I got it.

After fooling around with an online anagram generator, I discovered that “A Single Mother” is an anagram for “Something Real.”

Other options for “Single Mother” included “Gin Moth Reels” and “No Girl Themes.”

Open Source is Love

I’ve been learning how to create web sites using Joomla!, an open source content management system. This is primarily for work, but I can envision converting the DreamPunk site over to Joomla! at some point.

Additionally, I have upgraded the House of Whack forums to the latest version of phpBB, an open source forum.

What I need to do next is learn how to make custom templates for both of these packages. Give it that personal touch.

The Big Lebowski

The Coens have been on my mind since I saw No Country for Old Men. There were a bunch of clips from the Big Lebowski during the pre-show and I thought I should revisit it. I think I was a bit more into it this time around.

Whack Magnets

A few months ago I ordered some printable magnet material and today I used it to print out a set of rooms from House of Whack. Now I can play on the front of my refrigerator.

Interworld

Although the cover says the book was written by Neil Gaiman and Micheal Reaves, I will be filing this one under “R”.

Psychonauts

Tim Schafer’s best work to date. Absolutely stunning world design and top shelf writing. I’m nearing the end of the game, sad to think it will be over soon.

Veronica Mars

Working my way through the first season of Veronica Mars. Expertly written and acted, the show is full of stories that let you think you know what’s going on before throwing convention out the window.

9 Lives

As part of my SELP project, I am immersing myself in films relating to women’s issues, created by women filmmakers or having to do with single mothers. To date, I’ve watched the Vagina Monologues, Thirteen and 9 Lives.

9 Lives is a series of 9 loosely connected vignettes about various women. Each vignette is a single, uninterrupted take. Each woman in the film was complex and multi-layered and yet they were just a facet of all women, a different face for a different day.

The men in the film seemed brutish and awkward by comparison, even the most gallant failing to share a plane of equality with any of the female characters.

I was pleased to see Holly Hunter again, nuanced and wonderful. If you need to be reminded of Robin Wright Penn’s acting caliber, this is the film to check out.

The final story, a simple tale of mother and daughter, enacted by Glen Close and Dakota Fanning, cut me to the core. I thought I was observing a simple slice of life, but the reveal, accomplished with the simple rotation of the camera showed me the truth.
